Consumer watchdog organizations can alert you to corporations that put their profits first, before your health and safety are jeopardized.

In addition to government agencies that serve as regulators and enforcers of health and safety standards, there are several powerful consumer watchdog organizations that keep an eye out for corporations whose products are potentially harmful. Most of them have web sites that focus on education and consumer action alerts. Here are just a few examples that you might want to pursue for more information:

  • Public Citizen is one of the first and most credible consumer advocate groups. This organization conducts research, lobbies Congress on public health and safety legislation, and tracks the efficiency and effectiveness of government agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration, Consumer Product Safety Commission, and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Website: www.citizen.org
  • Public Interest Research Groups (PIRGs) are state organizations that research and disseminate information about issues such as product safety, health care and prescription drugs, and toxic-free communities. Website: www.uspirg.org
  • Corporate Watch is a San Francisco Bay Area-based group “committed to exposing corporate greed by documenting the social, political, economic and environmental impacts of transnational giants.” Their website contains current information and warnings about, for example, design defects and unsafe products. Website: www.corpwatch.org
  • Consumers Union, which publishes “Consumer Reports,” tests and provides unbiased reports for consumer products and services, health and nutrition, and other consumer issues. Website: www.consumersunion.org
  • Center for Science in the Public Interest is a non-profit organization that informs and educates the public about nutrition and the quality of our food supply. Its web site includes action alerts about potentially dangerous foods. Website: www.cspinet.org
  • Clean Water Action is a national citizens group focused primarily on the environment and clean, safe water. Web site articles on topics such as pharmaceuticals in our drinking water are informational and timely. Web site: www.cleanwateraction.org
